Injecting New Life Into The Trocadero

Do you want to know more about our plans to redevelop the Trocadero?  If so, read on…

In summer 2006 we submitted a planning application to redevelop the Trocadero following extensive public consultation.  This included a new hotel on the vacant upper floors of the building and improvements to the lower floors and surrounding streets to create a more attractive environment.  This application was subsequently withdrawn and we are now working on revised plans.

Our overall aim remains to create a more welcoming, attractive environment for all, improving the contribution this landmark building makes to the West End.  The key change to the plans is a reduction in the scale of the proposals. In practice, this means the number of hotel rooms has been reduced to 500 from 600 and the hotel has been set back to limit its visual impact.

The new plans include:

  • A smaller, 500-bedroom flagship Ibis hotel on the Trocadero's vacant upper floors
  • A new contemporary glass façade along Shaftesbury Avenue
  • Converting the vacant ‘Other Cinema’ on Rupert Street into a community cinema, to be managed by London Trocadero Limited
  • Improvements to smarten up Rupert Street, including new paving and road surface
  • New lighting along the Great Windmill Street arcade to make this a safer, more attractive walkway
  • Converting the Royal Adelphi Hotel, Charring Cross, into 20 residential units, five of which would be classified as affordable

We have sent out a newsletter to update councillors, neighbours and stakeholders on the changes to the scheme. You can download a copy of the newsletter here.
